CHARACTER INFO
Character Name: Max Caulfield
Character Canon: Life is Strange
History: wikia. (Spoilers for entire game. Also trigger warning for basically everything. There's a lot of intense content, be cautious if you need to. Section on final episode of the game is pretty sparse, but AU is more similar to early-game anyways.)
AU History:
Born to a slightly upperclass family in Union, relatives of some other families like the Tenohs. From a young age Max had an interest in more artistic pursuits, that her parents supported, which eventually turned towards photography. Her early life was relatively uneventful, and she grew up slightly sheltered.
About a year ago, as Union began to interact more with other civilizations, her family decided to move to Caldera for a change of pace. While there, Max fell out of contact with all her friends and old acquaintances from Union (her fault). Despite having a relatively pleasant time in Caldera, Max eventually decided to move back to Union on her own, thinking there'd be more opportunity to make use of her photography skills there.
After moving back to Union, her Enlightened abilities began to develop, which sidetracked any of her other plans.
Canon Personality:
Max fits the stereotype of "shy girl" to a tee. She is withdrawn and introverted, spending more time writing down her thoughts and feelings in a journal than she does expressing them to others. She prefers to sit sit back and observe the world instead of interacting directly (a mindset that neatly fits with her hobby of photography). She's also relatively self-conscious, nervous, and occasionally self-debasing. She has a strong curiosity about other people, to the point where she can go a little to far, and thus many people consider her nosy. Though most consider her "too cool to care", she clearly has a desire to get people to like her, even abusing her rewind power to learn what to say to people to please them. She has deep insecurities about not being good enough and being too childish.
Regardless, she is relatively clever. Despite an occasionally tendency to space out, she has been described by others as "attentive", and is observant of small details and can notice things that others may not. Part of this is having a photographer's eye for framing, part of it is just due to her observant nature. She's smart enough to easily navigate through the complexities of time manipulation, even being intuitive enough to figure out ways to use it to manipulate situations on the fly. She's fairly mature and down-to-earth, able to keep a clear enough head in extreme situations to figure out solutions.
In addition, she is an exceptionally kind person. Even with her reluctant nature, most of her rare interactions with others are kind and involve her trying to reach out to other people. She shows (in the alternative timeline) that she has the ability to be cold, standoffish, and borderline cruel, but in the primary timeline her good heart and moral compass seems to prevent her from becoming mean in that way. Even when doing something she might feel is morally wrong or mean she feels deeply guilty about it. She comforts people when she can, and, when pushed, will stand up for others even at her own risk.
Through the progression of the game, this brave side of her becomes more defined and prominent. Max becomes far less hesitant, as well as more decisive in her actions. Initially she uses her time abilities as a crutch to do so, as she can do whatever she wants and then go back and correct anything, free of consequences. However, as time goes on she grows more intuitively and can do things without needing the rewind as much. She focuses less on trying to get people to like her or staying out of trouble, instead going after what she feels is right or important. She accepts the responsibility of her power and tries to use it to help people, even admitting where she might have abused it. She allows herself to feel more anger and expresses her feelings more readily to others. Her abilities, more than anything else, eventually allow her to grow more confident in herself.
AU Deviation:
Her AU personality is relatively similar to her canon personality, since her AU history is relatively similar to her canon history up to gaining powers. However, she is more similar to her early-game personality, without yet having learned to be more confident. She is still shy and somewhat reserved, having trouble making and keeping friends. Her Enlightened abilities give her an excuse to interact with other people more, but she hasn't grown as much and still has trouble breaking out of her shell. In addition, in the AU she has an easier time interacting with Pokemon instead of people.
Canon Abilities:
Max has a number of abilities that allow her to manipulate and control time.
Rewind
Max has the ability to "rewind" time, but can only go back a few minutes at most. She doesn't move during this (allowing her to teleport in a way), and she retains any objects she has on her.
Focus
Max is able to jump back in time by focusing on any photograph. This brings her back to the moment of the photograph. She can only go in the "range" of the photograph (a room or two at most) and eventually jumps back to her current time. However, she can change things in the past this way and change the timeline.
Freeze Time
With this, Max can freeze time completely. She can still move and interact with objects like doors, but she can't move through anything living. This puts a heavy strain on her body.
Visions
Randomly she may have visions of future events, during which she can walk around and interact with the vision. In the real world she is unconscious during these. In canon her visions are only of a single event (a storm destroying the town).
Rewinding, focusing, and freezing time take a great toll on Max, especially if used too intensively. This usually causes nosebleeds, but can also cause her to pass out (usually accompanied by a vision)
On the more mundane side, she is talented at photography. She’s also relatively deductive and smart, as well as being clear-headed and practical, which is pretty widely advantageous.
Enlightened Abilities:
Analyst, with Psychic/Normal typing. Given her typing, she doesn't really have any unusual physical attributes.
Current abilities:
Moveset: Teleport, Encore, Disable, Foresight, Play Nice, Future Sight
First Evolution:
Moveset: Protect, Substitute, Agility, Heal Bell
Second Evolution
Moveset: Whirlwind, Razor Wind, Trick Room, Me First
Starter Pokémon:
Deerling (listed as a temporary starter), Scatterbug (Ultra Common)
Notes/Special Considerations:Considering she has occasional prophetic visions of the storm in canon, I was hoping to maybe have her see similar visions of some type of destruction if there's ever a plot coming up that it would be appropriate/convenient for. This isn't super vital, but I thought I'd mention it here anyways.

You are alone and bereft of your Pokémon allies; upon what strengths do you rely on to see yourself safely home?
I'd like to think I'm kinda sneaky, so maybe I could just sneak past anything without any trouble. Or... I could try to make use of my surroundings? I can be observant, sometimes... But that probably wouldn't work out as flawlessly as I'd hope, huh? [She gives a faint and nervous laugh. Then, a little quieter,] I guess that's why I don't go out alone.
You plunge into the depths of ruins of an ancient civilization. What is it that you seek from the past? Treasure, technology, wisdom?
[It takes her a moment to think this one over.] Technology. Wisdom is a close second, but you never know when you'll get new technology next. And it can improve people and Pokemon's lives a lot. [She nods, reassuring herself.] Yeah. Technology.
When encountering a rare and powerful Pokémon, what is most important? Researching it, bonding with it, or defeating it? Why?
[That's a bit of a frightening idea. She steels herself to the thought, then answers with some determination.] Bonding with it, for sure. That's the best for everyone. Plus, you might even be able to learn from it if it's your ally.
What does the story of the Savior mean to you?
It, um... [She looks down at her hands quickly. Her eyes dart to the side in thought, like a student trying to remember the correct answer to a teacher's question.] It shows the important of selflessness and humility. It's only because of the Savoir's bravery that we're here. [She keeps her gaze low, avoiding looking at the questioner from nervousness of hearing their reaction.]
To what lengths would you go to rescue your allies if they were lost in the wilderness?
I'd do anything I could to help them, even if I had to put myself at risk. [A brief pause as she considers the question in more detail.] But I'd... try to be prepared first. I wouldn't want to get stranded too and just end up needing rescuing. That'd be missing the point.
What do you feel your role in your city is?
I... I want to be a photographer, but I know that's not a very valuable profession with everything that's going on. [She shifts awkwardly in her seat and frowns slightly. That's not enough of an answer, and she knows it.] I try to do my best to help people, wherever I can. I don't have the strength to defend us the way some people do, but I try to help make people's days a little better. That's got to mean something.
